Mastica is a Greek word which refers to a resinous substance exuded from the bark of the mastic tree. This natural resin is commonly used as a flavoring agent, a food additive, and even in some cosmetics. However, there are a few synonyms for the word mastica, including gutta-percha, dammar, and copal. Gutta-percha is a substance derived from the sap of several trees, mostly found in Malaysia. Dammar, on the other hand, is a yellowish resin used in varnishes, and copal is a fossilized resin used in perfumes and incense.
