The Rocky Mountain Grasshopper, also known as the Melanoplus spretus, was once a common insect species found in the Rocky Mountain region of North America in the 1800s. However, a massive outbreak and subsequent extinction wiped them out in the late 1800s. The grasshopper was also known as the locust or the Mormon cricket due to its association with the Mormon pioneers who faced swarms of them during their journey westward. At the time, the grasshopper was listed under the genus Acridium, and it was also referred to as the migratory grasshopper. However, regardless of the various other names given to this insect, the Rocky Mountain Grasshopper remains its most popular.
