Hansen's Disease, also known as leprosy, is a chronic infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. The term Hansen's Disease is named after Dr. Armauer Hansen, who discovered the bacterium in 1873. However, the stigma attached to the term "leprosy" has prompted the search for more acceptable synonyms. Various synonyms for Hansen's Disease include lepra, neuropathic leprosy, and Morbus Hansen (named after Dr. Hansen). Additionally, some cultures prefer regional or indigenous terms, such as kala-azar, mal de Pinto, and sinkara, among others. Regardless of the name, Hansen's Disease remains a significant health issue in many developing countries with a high incidence of this condition.
