Chokedamp, a term used to refer to a deadly mixture of gases, including carbon dioxide, methane and nitrogen, can be referred to as "black damp," "mine air" or "stinkdamp." Black damp is a synonym for chokedamp, commonly found deep underground in coal mines. Stinkdamp is used to describe the putrid odor produced by the gases and is commonly associated with sulfur dioxide. Other synonyms used to describe chokedamp include "white damp" and "fire damp" which are commonly used in the mining industry. Although these terms are used interchangeably, they all refer to a lethal mixture of gases that can cause grave danger to humans.
