Thermal noise is an unwanted electrical signal that arises due to the random movement of electrons in conductive materials. It can be described as Johnson noise, white noise, or Gaussian noise because of its statistical properties. It's also known as Johnson-Nyquist noise in the honor of John B. Johnson and Harry Nyquist who researched and developed the theory of thermal noise in the early 1920s. Additionally, thermal noise can be referred to as random noise, noise floor or simply noise. Nevertheless, thermal noise remains a significant challenge for electronic designers as it can obscure important signals and degrade the performance of electronic devices.
