Stratum Basale, also known as the basal layer, is the deepest layer of the epidermis in the skin. It is composed of cells called basal cells, which play a crucial role in skin homeostasis, regeneration, and wound healing. There are a few synonyms for stratum basale which include Stratum germinativum, basal cell layer, and stratum basal cell layer. Stratum germinativum is a term derived from Latin, which means the germinating layer. This term is used because basal cells in this layer are constantly dividing and generating new cells. The basal cell layer refers to the layer of skin where basal cells are present, just like the stratum basale. Lastly, stratum basal cell layer is a combination of the words stratum basale and basal cell layer.
